Homes evacuated after fire spreads through shops

A number of homes have been evacuated after a fire broke out in a row of shops and takeaway restaurants.

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue said eight appliances were sent to Burghley Drive, Corby, after it was called at about 05:30 BST.

About 70 properties were left without electricity when it was cut off by National Grid at 06:23, but power has since been restored, the company said.

No-one has been reported as being injured and the blaze has now been put out, with crews remaining at the scene to dampen down the site, the fire service said.

Householders in the area have been told to keep their windows and doors closed due to the amount of smoke

Properties next to the business premises were evacuated by Northamptonshire Police as a precaution.

People have been asked to avoid the area, while householders have been advised to keep their windows and doors closed.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze will take place when it is safe to do so, the fire service added.
