A man has appeared in court charged with murdering a 26-year-old father-to-be who died after he was hit by a car in Doncaster.

Najib Maghsodi, 26, suffered life-threatening injuries when he was hit by a silver Hyundai in Prince's Street just after 20:30 BST on Friday and later died in hospital.

South Yorkshire Police said the driver of the vehicle failed to stop at the scene.

Stefan Wheeler, 31, of Northgate in Doncaster, appeared at Doncaster Magistrates' Court earlier charged with murder, dangerous driving and other motoring offences. He is due to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday.

In a tribute, the victim's family said he was "the most amazing, kind and beautiful husband, son, and soon-to-be dad."

They added: "We are beyond words and the pain is indescribable" and said "Najib was taken from us far too soon".
