A teenage girl is in a critical condition in hospital after she was found lying on a road with serious head and chest injuries, police said.

The 16-year-old was found near a bus stop on Rook's Nest Road in Wakefield at about 20:30 BST on Tuesday and taken to hospital, West Yorkshire Police said.

The road remains closed for investigations and motorists are advised to find alternative routes.

A police spokesperson said: "Inquiries are ongoing today as to how she came to suffer these injuries, which include serious head and chest injuries, and anyone with information or footage which may assist this investigation should contact us."

Temporary Det Ch Insp Elly Buchanan, from the homicide and major enquiry team, said: "We are keeping an open mind as to what has happened and are working to understand the full circumstances as to how she became injured.

"I am urgently appealing to anyone who was driving or walking in the Rooks Nest Road area between 20:00 and 20:30 on Tuesday evening to come forward and speak with us. Just the smallest bit of information could help our investigation.

"If drivers have dashcam we are keen to see that, along with doorbell footage from surrounding houses."
