Residents' board to decide £20m estate funding
LDRSA board has been appointed to decide how £20m of funding could be spent on a "left behind" estate in Bradford.
Holme Wood is one of dozens of areas across the country that will benefit from the Government's Pride in Place funding, which was announced last year.
Under the scheme, a panel of local residents, politicians, community groups, churches and businesses will decide how £2m will be invested in the area each year for the next 10 years.
Sam Kirkby, who was appointed chair of the Pride in Place Neighbourhood Board for Holme Wood, said he hoped the programme would bring about "long-lasting change".
He added: "Having spent all my life on the estate it is fantastic to be a part of a once-in-a-generation opportunity of community-led regeneration."
According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the board held its first meeting on Friday.
Councillor Matt Edwards, who represents Holme Wood and Bierley on Bradford Council, said it was a "really exciting time" for the area.
"For too long, Holme Wood, like many communities across Bradford, has been left behind by governments both nationally and locally," he said.
"Pride in Place is a genuine chance to change that and make sure investment is shaped by the people who live here."
Labour MP for Bradford South Judith Cummins said it was a "huge opportunity to build on the strengths of our community".
She said: "I am delighted to welcome Sam to his role as chair. He is a Holme Wood resident and community leader who brings years of experience and community involvement to the role.
"His leadership will be vital in ensuring that local voices and strong community partnerships are at the heart of this work to bring lasting change to the area."
