Homes 'uninhabitable' after workshop fire spreads

Fire crews have been tackling a large blaze that has left two homes "uninhabitable".

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service said five crews tackled the blaze, which was reported shortly before 15:00 BST, on Alfred Avenue, Metheringham.

The service said two semi-detached properties and numerous outbuildings had been affected. There were no reports of any injuries.

Helen Gridley, divisional commander at Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, said the fire was believed to have started in a garden workshop, before spreading to the houses.

"Our crews have done a fantastic job in the initial stages to stop the fire spreading but, unfortunately, both houses were on fire on arrival," she said.

"However, we have managed to stop it spreading to neighbouring properties.

"The main thing for us is that everybody is safe."

Gridley said two families had been moved to alternative accommodation.

She added: "The properties have been damaged beyond habitable arrangements.

"We will make sure the properties are left secure, however, unfortunately, I don't think they will be able to return to the properties in the future."
