Scout group buys walkie-talkies after PCC grant
GettyA scout group is to buy walkie-talkies and emergency shelters to help keep young members safe after receiving a grant.
Northamptonshire's Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Danielle Stone awarded £1,390 to the 7th Corby Kingswood Scout Group.
The walkie-talkies will allow leaders to monitor children when out exploring, while the emergency shelters will offer them protection from the elements.
Mark Phipps, the group's leader, said the grant also "helps us keep scouting accessible" because "for many families, affordability can be a real barrier".
The money will fund 12 walkie-talkies and 10 emergency shelters for the 7th Corby Kingswood Scout Group, whose members range from four to 14 years old.
"This grant gives us the tools we need to keep our Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts safe while they're out exploring, learning new skills and building their confidence," said Phipps.
Stone awarded the grant as part of her Safe and Sound Plan, which aims to support communities and keep young people away from harm.
"The Scouts give young people a positive place to spend their time and develop skills that will keep them on the right path for the future," she said.
"I am pleased that the funding will help the group to keep providing a fun but safe environment for so many young people."
Community groups, charities and local organisations can apply for grants of up to £10,000 through the Safe and Sound Communities Fund.
