A 61-year-old man has died after he was struck by a car in the centre of a North Yorkshire town.

Emergency services were called to Market Place in Thirsk at about 22:30 BST on Sunday, after a pedestrian was hit by a white Mercedes-Benz A-Class car outside the Nova Bar.

The man, who is from the local area, died at the scene despite the efforts of firefighters and paramedics, police said.

The driver of the car, a 46-year-old man from Darlington, is assisting the investigation.
