Two in hospital after serious A1 lorry crash

Two men have been taken to hospital, with one seriously hurt, after two lorries crashed on the A1 near Peterborough.

Both vehicles caught fire following the collision in the northbound carriageway near Stibbington, at about 02:45 BST.

The road has been shut northbound from Junction 17 for the A605/A1139 to the A47 at Wansford, and would likely remain so for the rest of the day due to road repairs taking place, said Cambridgeshire Police.

Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade called it a "significant incident", with multiple fire, ambulance and police officers attending.

A nearby resident told the BBC she was "woken by an explosion which sounded like a bomb".

Diversions have been put in place via the A1139, A1260 Nene Parkway and A47. The southbound A1 has also been reduced to one lane near the scene.

A spokesperson for the East of England Ambulance Service, said: "Three ambulances and an ambulance officer vehicle were dispatched to the scene. Two patients were transported to hospital for further care."

Cambridgeshire Police added that one of the men sustained serious injuries and the other minor injuries.

Officers said there were significant tailbacks near Junction 17, with the A15 from Hampton towards the A1 also heavily congested.

Motorists have been asked to find alternative routes where possible.
