Call for volunteers to get involved in sport

People are being encouraged to get involved in sports to help tackle a "shortage of volunteers".

Jersey Sport is hosting its first Volunteering in Sports Fair in a bid to bring together members of the public and sporting organisations to showcase the wide range of volunteering opportunities available across the island.

The event will take place between 12:00 and 14:00 BST at the Pomme d'Or Hotel in St Helier on Tuesday.

Dominic Blampied, Jersey Sport's sport development officer, said with more and more sports being introduced on the island, the need for volunteers had grown.

Blampied said he spoke with with sports clubs regularly who said they have "somewhat of a shortage of volunteers".

He said the aim of the fair was to try and help people who "may not have found their sport or what they want to do" find a role that would work for them.

"It's almost a matchmaking process" he said.

"We want to connect people who are interested in volunteering with local sporting organisations and show them just how many different ways they can get involved and what the benefits are.

"Whether you have years of experience in sport or have never volunteered before, there is an opportunity for everyone."

He said roles available included sport-based volunteering like coaching or marshalling, but also positions such as treasurers, secretaries and social media assistants.

"Sport is something that brings people together," Blampied added.

"It's the sector in which most volunteers on the island are in.

"The best thing about volunteering in sport, it can be done weekly, it can be done monthly, it can be done sporadically, whenever you want to do it, we can guarantee there will be a role for you."
