Affected households now have weekly food waste collection and recyclable waste collected mixed together

Changes to the recycling system for 27,000 properties in Thanet have come into effect, according to the local authority.

Thanet District Council said changes would take effect from Monday for the households - about a third of the borough - bringing them into line with most others in the Kent district.

Homes will now have a weekly food waste collection, recyclable waste collected mixed together every two weeks, and general waste collected every two weeks.

Recycling and general waste will be collected on alternate weeks and collection days will remain the same, according to the council.

The local authority's most recent figures show the district's recycling rate is 34.7%, which is below the England-wide rate.

Government rules requiring councils to collect certain recyclable waste, including food waste, took effect from 31 March.
