Bridge closures to affect road and waterway users
BBCMotorists and canal users are being warned of essential works taking place on the High Orchard Bridge in Gloucester, which will see road and waterway closures.
From 20:00 BST on Monday to 06:00 BST on Tuesday, the bridge will be raised and lowered continually for investigation works, and the same again overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.
Drivers should expect delays and diversions along St Ann's Way.
A spokesperson for the Canals and Rivers Trust said: "These investigation works will be taking place at night as the road over the bridge will be closed, thus traffic congestion will be minimised with night working."
From Wednesday at 17:00 BST, the waterway will be closed for six days to vessels taller than 5.5m as the bridge will remain in its lowered position.
This also means the towpath will be closed while investigation works are under way.
It comes as a planning application has been submitted for the removal of the masts on High Orchard Bridge, which the application states will not affect tall ships wanting to pass through.
The Canals and Rivers Trust said the masts' permanent removal would ensure the "long-term safety" of the structure, but not affect the lifting mechanism.
If approved, these works would take about three weeks to complete.
