Arrest after girl, 16, struck by car, dies

A man has been arrested over the death of a 16-year-old girl who was struck by a car.

Northumbria Police said officers were called to a collision involving the girl and a silver Ford Fiesta in Lobley Hill Road, close to the junction with Schoolhouse Lane, in Gateshead at about 22:40 on Friday.

Police said she suffered serious injuries and died shortly after in hospital.

A man, 19, who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has since been released on bail pending further inquiries.

The force has appealed for witnesses or anyone who may have dashcam footage in the lead up to the collision.
