Police were called to reports of a disturbance in the Cranhill area of Glasgow on Tuesday

A man has been arrested and charged during a disturbance following a protest in Glasgow.

Officers were called to Lamlash Crescent in the Cranhill area on Tuesday afternoon after reports of a large group gathering outside a block of flats.

Videos posted on social media showed police cutting off part of the street while the group shouted and chanted. At least one man was then led away from the flats and into a waiting police van.

Police later said a 50-year-old man was arrested and charged over a police assault.

It is understood that the protest was related to an incident in Glasgow city centre in late May.

A 19-year-old man was charged with raping a woman and a 20-year-old man was charged with assault. Both men were released on bail.

The protest took place after the 20-year-old moved into the Cranhill area and residents identified him as the man who was charged with assault.

The disturbance is claimed to have been linked to a similar protest in the Royston area of the city last week.

Police say their inquiries into the incident in Cranhill are ongoing.
