A man has been seriously injured after a car being driven the wrong way hit his vehicle on the M1 near Wakefield.

West Yorkshire Police said a blue Kia Proceed had failed to stop for police and was being driven the wrong way up the northbound carriageway, where it struck a red Dacia Sandero shortly after 23:00 BST on Friday.

The driver of the Dacia, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital with potentially life-changing injuries.

Three people - an 18-year-old man, a 15-year-old girl and a 30-year-old woman - have been arrested for causing injury by dangerous driving. One other person fled the scene.

The woman was also arrested for being over the prescribed limit.

Anyone who witnessed the crash has been urged to come forward by officers.
