A fire at a turkey farm has led to the death of about 3,000 birds.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the blaze in Peach Lane, Nantwich, shortly after 16:00 BST on Sunday.

Nine fire engines attended the scene and crews said the shed was "significantly damaged by fire".

A spokesperson for Aviagen Turkeys said on Monday it was grateful for the swift response of the fire service and was using contingency measures with customers.

"The fire at our farm near Nantwich has sadly led to the loss of around 3,000 birds," the firm said.

"We are grateful for the swift response of the fire service and are working closely with customers to implement our contingency measures, which are in place for just such an eventuality."
