Man jailed for Christmas day shooting and stabbing

A man who fired a BB gun and stabbed a man in the chest during a fight on Christmas Day has been jailed.

Edward Ward, 33, of Bradwell Lea, Glossop, Derbyshire, attacked two men in response to his car being damaged the previous day last year.

His stepfather Shane Fisher, 57, and stepbrother William Fisher, 23, were handed suspended sentences for their part in the violence which was captured by a neighbour on their phone.

Sentencing Ward to six years and eight months in prison, Judge Jonathan Straw KC, said: "You had a choice option to stay in, lock the doors and call the police – the sensible option – but you armed yourself to go outside to confront the individuals and attack them."

The judge said Ward had his car damaged by someone stamping on his windscreen on 24 December 2025.

The altercation the following day was the described as the "spark which lit the tinder box".

The court heard on spotting people outside his house who were alleged to have carried out the damage, Ward armed himself with a BB gun and a "menacing blade".

His stepbrother William Fisher, of the same address, joined him and picked up a garden rake as Ward fired two shots towards the car.

Chesterfield Justice Centre heard Ward used the butt of the gun to hit the driver who also suffered a stab wound to his chest and a slash across the length of his cheek.

The court was told William Fisher attacked the car with the rake, smashing the windscreen and the driver's door.

"They were understandably frightened, as was the passenger who got out and tried to flee but was pursued by you, William Fisher," the judge said.

"When you caught him he was punched and kicked. Not all of this is left to the imagination of the witness statements because I've seen the various footage of what's going on."

Ward's stepfather, Shane Fisher, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving after he rammed the victim's car.

The court heard Ward tried to fight firearms officers who arrived at the scene and resisted arrest, kicking the cage inside the police van repeatedly after he was detained.

The victims were taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary after suffering "significant and serious injuries".

On Thursday, Ward received a sentence of six years and eight months after admitting possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of a bladed article and affray.

His stepbrother William Fisher, who admitted affray and criminal damage was given a three-year sentence, suspended for 24 months and ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work.

His stepfather Shane Fisher, who admitted dangerous driving, was given a 12-month sentence, suspended for 12 months, a £1,000 fine and a 12-month driving ban with a mandatory extended retest and 150 hours of unpaid work.
