A man and a teenager have been arrested after fields were set on fire in Heckmondwike.

Police were called to reports of a group of males setting fields alight off Walkley Lane at about 15:40 BST on Monday. A 17-year-old boy and a man, 30, were arrested on suspicion of arson.

A large scene was put in place while firefighters tackled the blaze and several nearby roads were closed due to smoke, West Yorkshire Police said.

DI Catherine Shackleton of Kirklees CID said: "Given the ongoing hot weather any such fires can obviously present a significant risk to public safety."

She added: "Two suspects remain in custody today and I would ask anyone who has information or footage which could assist us to contact us."
