Rail services to London faced major disruption because of a broken-down freight train.

The train was blocking the line between Ingatestone and Shenfield, in Essex.

Another locomotive was sent to recover it and the line reopened just after 07:30 BST, said rail operator Greater Anglia (GA).

GA added that residual delays would still affect trains from parts of Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk. It warned disruption was expected until 10:00.

The affected routes are:

  • Intercity services between Norwich and London Liverpool Street
  • Ipswich and Harwich Town – London Liverpool Street
  • Clacton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze – London Liverpool Street
  • Colchester Town – London Liverpool Street
  • Braintree - London Liverpool Street
