Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is warning of the risk of wildfires after two broke out this week.

The warnings come following one wildfire at Hankley Common which affected about 2 hectares (4.9 acres), and another at Blackheath Common affecting about 1 hectare (2.5 acres).

The fire service is encouraging people to take steps to be safe outdoors and prevent more fires.

"It may not seem hot enough, but wildfires are already starting in Surrey," a SFRS spokesperson said.

Guidelines put out by the fire service suggest swapping BBQs, camping stoves and open fires for picnics in the countryside, and disposing of any smoking materials properly.

They also recommend always taking litter home as bottles and glass can magnify the power of sun and start fires.

SFRS also said they do not condone flying lanterns, which can start fires while also posing a danger to animals which may ingest the metal wire.

If you encounter a fire in the countryside, it is recommended to call 999 immediately and ask for the fire service, and not to tackle the fire yourself, the SRFS spokesperson said.

"Get far away from the fire, it can spread incredibly quickly," they said.

"Your safety is the most important thing."
