Reform addresses 'speculation' over bonfire event
ReutersA local authority said "no final decision" had been made about a town's annual fireworks event after "speculation" over its future.
The Northamptonshire Telegraph reported that Reform UK-controlled North Northamptonshire Council was due to axe Corby's bonfire night event, which is free to the public.
In a statement on Monday, the council denied any decision had been made, and set out "some wider context around the considerations currently being discussed within the administration".
It said discussions were ongoing about "future funding arrangements" for the event.
The council said it recognised "the event is a long-standing and valued tradition for many local residents and families".
However, it sounded a note of caution as it added: "It is right that inherited funding arrangements from the former local councils are periodically reviewed to ensure they remain fair, sustainable and appropriate across the whole of North Northamptonshire.
"Events of this scale involve significant operational planning, officer time, emergency service co-ordination and public safety management alongside the direct financial cost itself."
The authority did not disclose when a final decision would be made, but said "whatever decision is ultimately reached, it will be taken with the long-term interests of the whole of North Northamptonshire in mind".
