Where to watch the Bristol Balloon Fiesta

The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta draws crowds of up to 500,000 over the weekend all looking to watch its colourful hot air balloons, but where are good places to watch?

This year's three-day-event, from 7–9 August, will host 120 balloons, the majority of which will be setting off from the main launch arena at Ashton Court.

Many will head to the festival site itself, something which is recommended by Visit West, and if you are on foot or cycling then entry is free.

As well as the balloons, there is plenty of other entertainment planned for Ashton Court.

But for those who want a quieter experience, we've compiled a list of some other vantage points to watch the mass ascents - which are weather dependent of course, and their flight path will be down to the wind direction.

If you're looking for classic Bristol skyline views, Clifton Observatory is a great place to sit out on the weekend.

The observatory is a much loved treasure among families and offers great picture opportunities if the balloons manage to take off.

Whilst the observatory itself does not have parking facilities, there is on-street meter parking on Clifton Down Road and Observatory Road.

On Sunday, the observatory will be hosting a Family Fun day with entertainment and activities for all ages.

A spokesperson said: "Visitors are welcome to soak up the atmosphere while enjoying one of the best panoramic views across Bristol as the balloons take to the skies.

"We'll be opening our rooftop terrace and café from 05:00 BST for the morning ascents. For the evening ascents, we're hosting our Balloon Fiesta Sunset Party Friday and Saturday from 17:30 BST."

Known for being the highest place in the wider Bristol area, offering panoramic views, the 723 ft (223 meters) tall hill makes a great vantage point overlooking Bristol.

Although, keep note that the hill is situated south of Bristol and the wind directions on the weekend will play a part in what can be seen.

Visitors can find limited free parking available at Dundry Village Car Park.

Troopers Hill is a popular east Bristol vantage point located in the St George area of the city.

The local nature reserve is free to access, however, is home to steep hillsides and rocky sandstone, so visitors should bear that in mind.

Car parking is available on nearby roads, but Friends of Trooper Field ask visitors to respect local residents.

Malvern Road provides the easiest access for those with limited mobility as this path to the hill avoids a steep climb.

Providing the winds blow in the right direction, the Harbourside makes a great place to see the hot air balloons in flight.

Surrounded by local cafés and attractions, it's a favourite spot on most weekends, let alone when the fiesta is in town.

There are plenty of parking spots available nearby, although visitors should be aware the the harbourside is within the city's clean air zone.

This park in Knowle is a large green natural ampitheatre with a children's play area at the bottom.

It offers expansive views towards Ashton Court and the city centre, and has become a favourite place to see the hot air balloons over the years.

Free parking is generally available on the nearby residential streets.

For those located near the heart of Bristol, Brandon Hill is a great option and is only a short walk from Park Street.

It also a popular picnic spot - with the top of the hill providing views over the harbourside.

It is easily accessible via public transport with buses stopping nearby on both Park Street and Anchor Road.
