Crooked steps at a beach in north-east Essex have been replaced by a new set that cost £197,000.

The previous staircase in Frinton-on-Sea had become misaligned because of movement within the cliff it was set in.

Tendring District Council said the new galvanised steel structure could be adjusted to account for any future changes in the landscape.

It leads visitors from The Leas to the seafront and work on the project began in April.

Independent councillor Adrian Smith, who is responsible for coast protection, said the staircase provided easier access to a "much-loved stretch of coastline".

"Delivering a complex scheme like this takes time, requiring careful planning and specialist engineering," he added.

Similar work to replace a staircase at Southcliff, in nearby Walton-on-the-Naze, is expected to completed by the end of 2026.
