Plans for 57-bed care home on former nursing site

Proposals for a 57-bedroom care home at a former nursing home site in Jersey have been submitted in a planning application.

Palm Springs Nursing Home in St Helier closed in 2021 and PS Developments said there had been a "renewed market interest" for care homes.

One care home in June said it needed to increase its rooms due to worries it could become full, although health professionals said they were concerned Jersey may not have the workforce to meet demand in the care sector in the future.

Developers said their proposed care home was a sustainable redevelopment of the brownfield site at Trinity Hill and aligned with the government's Island Bridging Plan. A decision date has yet to be set.

The application said the plans would support needs for modern elderly care accommodation, and promoted sustainable travel with its closeness to public transport and cycling infrastructure.

Developers added the plans retained important landscaping and biodiversity features and would include energy-efficiency measures such as rooftop solar panels.

PS Developments said an existing planning permission for 12 apartments and four houses at the site had been approved in 2023, but "renewed market demand has prompted this stronger, more community-focused proposal".
