Five candidates are hoping to win a seat on Telford and Wrekin Council in a by-election triggered by the exit of a councillor who serves as an MP in the area.

The contest for Malinslee and Dawley Bank follows an announcement by Telford's Labour MP Shaun Davies that he is stepping down from the authority after 15 years.

The 40-year-old said he was advised to give up his council seat when he was appointed a government whip last month.

The Conservative group in Telford and Wrekin has accused him of "jumping ship" ahead of local elections in the borough next May. Davies has rejected the claim.

Only residents living in the Malinslee and Dawley Bank ward, which includes large parts of the town centre, will be able to vote in the election.

The candidates are as follows:

  • Ben Carter, Labour Party
  • Patrick Jerome Doody, Liberal Democrats
  • Doug Halsall, Reform UK
  • Jazz Holmes, Green Party
  • Thomas Paul Hoof, Conservatives

The election is scheduled to take place on Thursday 2 July.
