Lincoln Imp gets club shirt to celebrate promotion

A medieval religious relic has been dressed in a Lincoln City shirt to celebrate the club's promotion to the Championship as League One winners.

The 14th Century Lincoln Imp stone carving in the city's cathedral donned the red and white striped shirt alongside two of the team.

They were joined by Imps supporter Stuart Boyfield who is the longest serving member of staff at Lincoln Cathedral, having worked there for 48 years.

He described climbing up scaffolding to fit the shirt to the imp on its stone column as "not an everyday thing".

"I never thought they [the cathedral] would agree to it to start with," he said.

"So just to mark what they've achieved this season, it's absolutely amazing."

Watching on was midfielder Jack Moylan, who said it was the first time he had seen the imp, which features on the club's badge.

"It's great. Great for the city, great for the club," he said.

"It's who we are, it's who the city is and to finally actually see it... and it has a little Lincoln jersey on it now.

"I suppose it's one of us now as well, so we're all in it together."

Lincoln City clinched the title with a 2-0 victory at Doncaster Rovers last week.

A victory parade with the team and the trophy is to be held through the streets of Lincoln on 9 May.
