A police officer has admitted repeatedly pushing a 13-year-old boy who asked him for a lift home, following an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

PC Daniel Rusling dragged the teenager by his clothing during an altercation outside Monkton Park police station in Chippenham, at about 03:00 GMT on 14 October last year.

Rusling was charged with one count of assault by beating and appeared at Bristol Magistrates' Court on 21 May, where he pleaded guilty.

Deputy Chief Constable Mark Cooper said: "As police officers, our primary function is to protect those most vulnerable in our communities. Clearly, this officer's actions have gone against everything we stand for."

The boy, who was part of a group of six children, had called 999 to ask for help after reportedly being threatened by the occupants of a vehicle in the early hours of 14 October.

PC Rusling swore at the boy when he asked for a lift home. He also pushed him aggressively with both hands, six times, and dragged him away from his police car.

It was alleged the level of force used against the teenager, who was uninjured, was unlawful and Rusling was charged with one count of assault by beating, contrary to Section 39 Criminal Justice Act.

The IOPC investigated the matter following a mandatory conduct referral by Wiltshire Police on 28 October 2025.

The independent body is overseeing both the criminal and misconduct elements of the case.

The 30-year-old officer appeared in front of magistrates on Thursday, where he admitted the charge.

Rusling has been bailed to reappear at court on 30 June.

An expedited gross misconduct process will now take place.

"It is important that we preserve the integrity of the ongoing, independent investigation, but I am committed to keeping our communities updated on this matter," said Cooper.
