Abandoned vehicles have been removed from a coastal car park and scrapped.

Two vehicles were removed from the Portinfer car park after being identified as abandoned by Traffic and Highway Services in May.

The Committee for Environment & Infrastructure (E&I) said notices were put on the cars explaining when they were due to be collected for disposal and letters were sent to their registered owners before their removal on 12 June.

Committee member Deputy Andy Cameron said he was keen to see all abandoned vehicles identified and removed as they were an "eyesore" and a "source of pollution".

The States said a number of other vehicles were due to be removed

Cameron said abandoned vehicles "detract from our public spaces".

"I am keen to ensure that genuinely abandoned vehicles are identified and removed, while also making sure that we follow the correct process and do not take action against vehicles that are still in legitimate use," he said.

The vehicles were removed by Ozzy Ozanne Recoveries and scrapped by Guernsey Recycling Group, free of charge.

Cameron said: "Their support has enabled these vehicles to be removed at no cost to the taxpayer and is a great example of local businesses working with the community for the benefit of the island."

The States of Guernsey said a small number of other abandoned vehicles would be removed in the near future.
