Tributes paid to MBE recipients killed in crash
Tony MarshallTributes have been paid to an elderly couple, both MBE recipients, who were killed in a car crash in North Yorkshire at the weekend.
Alan Charlton, 90, and Joy McCulloch, 74, died when their grey Peugeot 2008 collided with a VW Golf near Scaling Dam on the A171, between Whitby and Guisborough, on Friday.
North Yorkshire said Joy, who was a passenger in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene while Alan, who was driving, was taken to hospital but later died as a result of his injuries.
The couple have not been formally named by North Yorkshire Police, but tributes have been paid to the couple, from Darlington, on social media.
The town's Labour MP Lola McEvoy said she was "shocked and saddened to hear" of their deaths.
Sh said: "I will, as will many across the town, be thinking of their families at this difficult time and the difference they made to the people of Darlington."
Joy was awarded an MBE in 1999 for services to healthcare while Alan received his in 2006 for his "contribution to the community".
He joined Darlington Rotary Club in 1990, serving as president at one stage.
In a statement issued by the club he was described as "a very committed and popular Rotarian" who was "well respected all over the area especially through his voluntary work at Darlington Memorial Hospital".
They said he was "a great man who will be much missed by all who knew him".
The driver and passenger in the VW, a man in his 20s and a teenager, were taken to hospital for treatment. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Officers investigating the crash have urged anyone with relevant dashcam footage or who may have seen the collision to get in touch.
