Thousands spent clearing fly-tipping as costs rise

More than £175,000 has been spent clearing fly-tipping and public waste in Rotherham since 2024, according to council figures.

A Freedom of Information (FOI) request has shown Rotherham Council spent £175,548 between 2024 and 2026.

There was a rise of almost £20,000 between 2024/25 and 2025/26 with the annual figure jumping from £78,973 to £96,575.

Rotherham Council has been contacted for comment.

According to the FOI request issued to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the most money was spent in central Rotherham, which includes areas such as Eastwood, totalling £76,035.45 over the two years.

Since 2019, 762 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) were issued to fly-tipping offenders across the borough,

So far in 2026, 26 FPNs have been issued and total of £27,750 has been paid to the council in FPN 'fines' since 2024.

Figures from 2024 show almost a third of all fly-tipping offences committed in the borough were in the Rotherham East ward, which accounted for 2,071 of all cases.
