Pledge to ensure sewers can cope with homes plan

A developer hoping to build 100 new homes has pledged to ensure that sewage and drainage infrastructure will be able to support its plans.

A&K Gateshead has submitted proposals to develop land off the A38 Tewkesbury Road in Twigworth, near Gloucester, to Tewkesbury Borough Council.

Residents and local parish councils have objected to the scheme and raised concerns over traffic, flooding and the drainage system not being able to cope after sewage flooded parts of Twigworth, Innsworth and Longford in February.

A spokesperson for the developer said the proposals had been "carefully and sympathetically designed" to take the site's history and flood risk into consideration.

The A&K Gateshead spokesperson said the company would work with Severn Trent to identify any required drainage improvements, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

"With 1,700 households on housing waiting lists across Tewkesbury borough, there is a high number of people who need well-connected, affordable homes," the spokesperson added.

"Our proposals would provide around 100 desperately needed new homes at a time when the council does not have enough land earmarked for new homes.

"Before any homes can be built, however, we want to make sure that local sewage and drainage infrastructure can sustainably support the development."

Tewkesbury Borough Council planners are expected to consider the scheme by 6 October.
