Security increased after break-ins at vacated school

Concerns over the risk of fire or serious injury have been raised after videos surfaced online showing masked intruders trespassing in a school which was closed by the council last month.

Security at Monkseaton High School, in Whitley Bay, has been increased, following a series of TikTok videos showing youths inside the building.

The school closed on 31 August after North Tyneside Council said there were no "viable options" to keep it open with only 511 pupils on the school roll, well below its 964 capacity, and a deficit of more than £8m.

A spokesperson for the local authority rejected claims the building was abandoned and said it was still in use by community groups.

Local Conservative councillor for New York and Murton, Claire McGinty, said action was needed before someone got hurt.

"Our immediate concern is safety," she said.

"An empty building of this size presents very real risks if people can gain access - whether that's someone being seriously injured or the risk of a fire."

The Local Democracy Reporting Service understands Northumbria Police are aware of the break-ins and inquiries are under way.

A North Tyneside Council spokesperson said: "Additional measures have been introduced, security presence has been increased, and further protective steps are being implemented to safeguard the premises.

"While the school is no longer operating as a mainstream educational setting, the building remains in regular use by community groups and other organisations.

"We are committed to ensuring it remains a safe and secure facility for everyone who uses it."
