A car with a young child inside was stolen and then abandoned in Leeds, police have said.

The grey Volvo was taken from Long Thorpe Lane in Wakefield at about 20:30 BST on Wednesday while the child's parents were nearby, and within 15 minutes it was recovered near Woodlesford Lock in Leeds.

It is believed the child, who was not related to the driver, was left in the car after the suspect ran off and was then looked after by officers.

No arrest have been made and inquiries are ongoing, West Yorkshire Police said.

The force added: "The child was already in the car when it was stolen, but was returned to their family safely."
