The Liberal Democrats have promised voters in North East Lincolnshire they will tackle crime and anti-social behaviour if they are elected.

Voters will be heading to polling stations on 7 May to elect 15 councillors, a third of the 42 seats on North East Lincolnshire Council.

Currently, there are three Lib Dem councillors on the authority, and group leader Nicola Aisthorpe said they were already delivering results and holding the authority to account.

Aisthorpe pledged to ensure streets in the area were properly maintained and managed, increase recycling rates and expand investment opportunities for young people.

"Residents tell us that community safety is a major concern," Aisthorpe told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).

"Crime and anti-social behaviour are affecting daily life and leaving too many people feeling less safe in their own neighbourhoods.

"North East Lincolnshire should be a place where people feel safe, supported, and able to get on with their lives," Aisthorpe said.

"There must also be greater investment in early intervention and opportunities for young people, helping to stop problems before they escalate."

Aisthorpe said the Lib Dems would also reinforce housing and planning policy.

She highlighted "selective licensing", which she said had been introduced in the East Marsh ward after Lib Dem campaigning aimed at tackling poor housing conditions and irresponsible landlords.

"The priority now is proper enforcement so it delivers real improvements," Aisthorpe said.

She said she wanted to improve recycling rates, and said Lib Dem-led councils achieved some of the highest recycling rates in the country.

"In North East Lincolnshire, rates remain around 38%, well below national ambitions of 60%," she said.

The LDRS asked Aisthorpe what difference Liberal Democrat councillors had made so far across North East Lincolnshire.

The group leader said they had put forward a fully funded plan for cleaner streets which had been approved and delivered.

Aisthorpe said the service had reduced litter complaints by 30% and removed more than 55 tonnes of waste from residential streets.

She said Lib Dem councillors had also put forward a fully funded plan to overhaul how council tax debt is handled, and exposed unequal enforcement of dangerous parking across the borough.
