Seaside resort's key route set for night closures

Weymouth Esplanade is set to close overnight over three weeks while the road is resurfaced.

Dorset Council said the work on the key seafront route would be carried out in three stages after checks found parts of the road surface were wearing out.

Residents with parking permits will be able to use them in the Swannery Car Park. The works will not affect access for pedestrians, and homes, businesses and hotels can still be reached on foot.

Work is due to start on King's Street with overnight closures in place on Monday and Tuesday from 20:00 to 06:00 BST. Only the section of road being worked on at the time will be closed overnight, with signed diversion routes in place.

The second stage of the work will take place betweenJubilee Clock to the Pavilion between 30 September to 5 October.

The final section will see the stretch from Jubilee Clock to St John's Church resurfaced from 8 - 15 October.

Dorset Council said all work will take place overnight Monday - Fridays.

The council said: "Working overnight allows us to complete the resurfacing more efficiently while reducing disruption during the day.

"We understand that overnight working may cause some disturbance for nearby residents. We will work to keep disruption to a minimum wherever possible and thank people for their patience while these essential improvements are carried out."

Bus travellers are being urged to check their journey as diversions or temporary arrangements will be in place where needed.
