Way off target! Player goes to wrong Ashford for FA Cup

A footballer has been playfully mocked by his club after travelling to the wrong Ashford for their FA Cup match.

Leatherhead FC's Marcel Barrington travelled to Ashford United's Green Box Stadium in Kent - more than 70 miles (113km) from Ashford Town's Robert Parker Stadium in Surrey.

But he still managed to come on as a second-half substitute for the Second Round Qualifying tie against Kingstonian, which his team went on to win 0-1.

Leatherhead's official match report highlighted the blunder, but jokingly said it would "spare any blushes" by keeping the name of the player secret. "Let's call him Barcel Marrington," it added.

Kingstonian currently ground share at the Robert Parker Stadium with Ashford Town (Middlesex) FC.

Barrington, 31, previously played for Stoke City's under-18s, Leicester City's under-21s, as well as Margate FC, Dartford FC, Herne Bay FC and Staines Town in the South East.

Earlier in 2026, a Spanish football fan hoping to watch FC Barcelona play in the Champions League was left disappointed when he arrived at St James Park in Exeter instead of St James' Park in Newcastle, where the match was being played.

Exeter City said it was only when he showed his ticket to staff he realised the error. They gave him a free ticket to their League One tie against Lincoln City, which they lost 1-0.
