Baby death inquiry told boy's brother died after cardiac surgery
BBCA doctor has told a fatal accident inquiry (FAI) a two-month-old baby would have been transferred from Aberdeen to Glasgow for surgery had she known his sibling had died from an inherited heart condition.
Michael Wilson was born on 11 August 2021 at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital and died at the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital on 15 October.
The inquiry heard that Michael's brother had an inherited heart condition and died from complications after cardiac surgery in 2019.
NHS Grampian anaesthetist Dr Kay Davies said had she known this, Michael would not have been anaesthetised in Aberdeen, and instead transferred to a specialist cardiac centre in Glasgow.
The opening day of the FAI was told that Michael had to undergo surgery for a hernia.
Davies said it was her understanding that this was "urgent and could not be delayed".
The process for the inquiry began last year.
The Lord Advocate considered the baby's death occurred in circumstances giving rise to serious public concern.
The discretionary FAI was ordered as a result to establish facts surrounding the baby's death rather than apportion any blame.
The inquiry at Aberdeen Sheriff Court, before Sheriff Christine McCrossan, continues on Friday.
