Crews tackle large waste fire in Essex

People have been urged to keep doors and windows closed as firefighters tackle a blaze involving about 200 tonnes of household waste.

The fire broke out on Thursday evening at a site in Archer's Fields in Pitsea, near Basildon.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said about one third of the waste pile - which was about 15m high (50ft) - was alight and crews were working to bring the blaze under control.

The service said: "Smoke is drifting across nearby roads. If you live in the area, please keep your windows and doors closed."
