Couple, aged 92 and 85, tie knot in care home
Charlton Grange Care HomeA couple, who are aged 92 and 85, have got married in a care home after being together for almost a decade.
Jimmy Cooper and Andrea Cullen met 10 years ago while living near each other in supported accommodation. In February, Cullen, 85, moved into Charlton Grange Care Home in Shepperton in Surrey, where her now-husband had been paying her daily visits.
They tied the knot in the courtyard of the care home, where staff helped plan the ceremony.
Cooper, 92, says his new bride is "a bundle of joy [and] always a very happy person".
The care home's kitchen team planned the catering and one of the site's carers officiated the ceremony as they were a regular pastor at Southall Baptist Church and provided weekly church services to the residents.
Cullen says Cooper is "very kind and he looks after me very well".
"He always knows what I need to make me happy," Cullen added.
Charlton Grange Care HomeDr Angad Singh Kooner, a representative from the care home, said: "It [the wedding] shows that life doesn't stop when someone moves into a care home.
"People continue to form relationships, make choices and have meaningful moments, whatever their age."
The newlyweds had lived together for more than a year in supported accommodation before Cullen moved into Charlton Grange Care Home, with support from Surrey County Council.
Sinead Mooney, cabinet member for adult social care at the council, said: "Andrea and Jimmy's wedding shows that major life events don't stop just because they become later-life events."
