An application to keep the site open beyond this year was rejected in March

A new application has been submitted to extend the operation of a North Lincolnshire landfill site, which is due to close this year.

A previous attempt to continue using the Roxby facility near Winterton until 2037 was refused by North Lincolnshire Council in March.

The council meeting heard the site, off the A1077 Winterton Road, had a history of odour complaints from nearby residents.

Operator Biffa has asked the council to allow operation until 2034, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).

The waste firm is also applying to keep the adjacent Roxby Rail Sidings operating until the site's restoration in 2041, the LDRS added.

A Biffa spokesperson said: "We are committed to fulfilling our obligations to restore the Roxby landfill site to a country park.

"Leaving the site unfilled is not a viable option, as it would result in long-term environmental and landscape impacts and would prevent delivery of the agreed future use of the land.

"We have therefore submitted a revised planning application to allow the site to be completed and restored responsibly. We will also be lodging an appeal with the Secretary of State against the refusal of planning permission issued in March."

More objections have been received in response to the new application, the LDRS said.

One person said: "As a local resident the smell is rancid, it reaches Winterton. Can't even put washing out some days."

Another objector stated: "The negative impact on the environment, the surrounding roads and the local residents that a granted extension would cause is simply unfair."

In 2006, the site on a former quarry was given permission by the council to operate until 10 May this year.

A planning document states Biffa will continue landfilling and restoration of the site while the latest planning applications remain pending.
