Council green lights new multi-use games facility

A North Yorkshire town with "insufficient" sporting facilities will receive a new multi-use games area after plans were agreed by the council.

The games area will be developed on an existing field at St George's RC Primary at Overdale in Eastfield, Scarborough, for use by both pupils and residents.

The new facility will be open during evenings and weekends, while a spectator stand will also be built on the 30m by 20m (98ft by 66ft) plot.

North Yorkshire Council, which approved the plans, said the scheme provided a "high-quality space" to the community, with planners noting a lack of sporting facilities in the area at present.

Council planning officers welcomed the proposal, adding it would provide a space for the community to engage in sports "year round".

To limit noise pollution, the school said it planned to implement a "no whistle policy" after 17:00 and reduced hours of operation, which will be from 09:00 to 21:00, Monday to Sunday.

No objections were made by the Highway Authority, with parking on-site deemed "suitable", according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The body said it expected no increase in traffic on neighbouring roads as a result of the new games area.

The plot will be laid with synthetic turf, enclosed by a three-metre (9.8ft) fence, while a lit access path would also be built for those wishing to use the facilities.
