Firefighters tackle late night blaze after lorry bursts into flames

Explosion of road-marking lorry in Glasgow

Firefighters tackled a late night fire in Glasgow after a tarmacking lorry near the M8 motorway burst into flames.

The incident occurred on New City Road, near Phoenix Road, just after 23:20 on Tuesday night.

Social media posts described hearing "a very loud bang/explosion" near the city centre, followed by huge plumes of smoke, while videos showed fire crews extinguishing the vehicle with water.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said it sent three appliances to the scene, and departed about 01:30 after making the area safe.

A nearby resident told BBC Scotland News he was lying in bed when he saw an orange glow through his curtains, followed by a loud bang.

Viaduct works for the M8 are currently being carried out at the road, intended to strengthen the structure.

No injuries were reported.
