Light railway could connect towns with Telford

A new light railway service could be set up in Telford to connect with the town's central rail station.

Telford and Wrekin Council has allocated £150,000 for a feasibility study and said a Very Light Rail line could potentially be up and running by 2030.

The project could use four miles of disused heavy railway line, with the council looking to identify and develop suitable station locations along the route.

Th authority said: "This early-stage feasibility study project presents an exciting opportunity to design a potential new rail link between the Shrewsbury–Wolverhampton rail line and the Ironbridge line, to allow Very Light Rail services to reach Telford Central railway station."

Ironbridge-based Revolution VLR currently holds a lease agreement with Network Rail to operate services.

The council is consulting on a wider transport policy for the area and said it was supportive of the light railway scheme.

Consultation is open until 27 September and a draft version of the plan and a survey are available on the council website.
