Two children had to be taken to hospital after being hit by a police van.

Cumbria Police said the crash took place on Saturday at 17:58 BST on Senhouse Street in Maryport.

According to a statement from the police, one of the secondary-school-aged children hit by the van remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition. The other suffered minor injuries and has since been discharged.

The force said the van had not been in pursuit or responding to an emergency at the time of the crash, and it has since referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). Senhouse Street remains closed for investigation.

Witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the collision have been asked to contact the police.
