A yellow wind warning affecting all of Cornwall and part of Devon has been issued for Monday night

People are being urged to take care and prepare for further disruption amid a warning for strong winds.

The Met Office issued a yellow warning for wind which covers all of Cornwall and part of Devon from18:00 GMT until 03:00 on Tuesday.

Coming hot on the heels of storms Austen and Boelo, forecasters said gusts of up to 65mph (105km/h) were expected along the coast with "heavy rain at times", while transport delays were "likely" as well as the potential for power cuts.

Emily Trapnell, from Falmouth Coastguard, said: "Just be really cautious when out and about around the coast these next few days."

Thousands of homes were left without power after Storm Austen hit the South West and Channel Islands on Friday, followed by Storm Boelo at the weekend.

Trains across Devon and Cornwall were delayed or cancelled, while some schools and businesses were forced to close.

Cornwall Council urged people to take extra care "particularly around the coast and on exposed roads" with south to south-westerly winds expected to increase later.

Falmouth Coastguard said it received a number of reports of bodyboarders, windsurfers and kayakers in difficulty around the coast at the weekend.

Trapnell said it was a reminder people should know "what local conditions are like and that you have the correct equipment".

She urged anyone visiting beaches later in the week to only swim in designated, lifeguarded areas and to never swim when red flags are up.

Damage assessments

The National Trust said a number of its sites across the South West were closed due to Storm Austen and closures "may continue at some places this week" due to the conditions.

They include Godolphin house, garden and tea rooms in Helston and Trengwainton Garden in Penzance.

The trust said teams would be assessing any damage and carrying out essential safety checks to ensure the safety of staff and visitors.

"We ask visitors to please check individual property websites and social media channels for the latest opening updates before travelling," a spokesperson said.
