Rainbow flag wrapped around castle for Pride event

A castle has been wrapped in a rainbow flag as part of a town's Pride celebrations.

Totnes Castle was covered by the 150m (492ft) flag on Saturday as part of a four-day festival.

It was part of a programme of live music, art, cinema and family events that have been put together by organisers who said they wanted to reflect Totnes's identity as one of the South West's most creative and progressive towns.

Ceri Goddard, from Totnes Pride, said they wanted the event to be a "bit different" so decided to have a big public art event and used "the iconic castle" to show "queer people have always been here and we always will be".

Goddard said 400 people gathered in the castle grounds before the flag was unfurled by 30 flag bearers at 10:45 BST.

"There were some logistical challenges but we had a rehearsal and we had the backing of English Heritage who have been amazing, helping us plan," said Goddard.

She said the flag was lent to the group by Torbay Pride.

Goddard described Totnes as "a very diverse community" and said it was "undergoing a culture of renaissance."

She said: "We are looking for new ideas and new people to get involved so I suspect it will be bigger next year because everybody's heard about it.

"Totnes Pride belongs to the people of Totnes, not a small committee in a room, so let's see where it goes next year."
