Elderly woman dies after being struck by van
GoogleAn elderly woman has died after a collision in front of a city train station.
Violet Stannard was standing on the pavement in Station Approach, outside Durham Train Station, when she was struck by a small van at about 13:20 BST on Monday.
Durham Police said the 86-year-old suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle but died on Tuesday evening.
Her family has expressed "heartfelt gratitude" and "tremendous respect to every single one of the outstanding emergency services who cared for and dealt with the traumatic injuries she sustained".
The family also wanted to thank the "the amazing staff on Ward 18 Critical Care Unit".
"You will never know how much your diligence, quality of care and amazing support shown to the family made such a difference in how we coped with this sudden loss," they said in a statement.
