A programme that helps people secure work experience placements and improve their skills has been shortlisted for a regional award.

City of Wolverhampton Council's Open Door scheme has made it to the final three nominees for the Partnership Award at the WMCA Adult Learning Awards.

The winner will be announced at a ceremony on 8 July.

Councillor Paula Brookfield, cabinet member for jobs, skills and opportunities, said it was "fantastic recognition" for a team that works "tirelessly" to support residents.

Open Door helps those who are actively seeking employment to enhance their employability by developing their skillset.

It provides structured work experience placements for Wolverhampton residents who are 18 years or older and not in education, employment or training.

Some 191 residents have been given work placements either with the council or employers in the city since April 2024 - and 80 have been supported into paid employment through Open Door.

The team also works with the Department for Work and Pensions to support people in work experience placements, and with schools in Wolverhampton to provide employment opportunities at the council for pupils aged 14 to 18.

Brookfield added: "This is fantastic recognition for the Open Door team, who work tirelessly to support the city's residents into work and training and are making a real impact by offering a range of flexible options.

"Not only is it important we equip young people with the skills for the jobs of the future, we need to ensure those opportunities are open to everyone, no matter their background."
