Car driver admits killing cyclist on Dartmoor
BBCA man has admitted causing the death of a bicycle rider on Dartmoor.
Blue Ramsey, 52, was cycling with friends on 4 August 2024 on the A382, near Chagford, Devon, when Jack Price's car pulled out in front of him, Exeter Magistrates' Court was told.
Father of four Ramsey was unable to avoid colliding with the Peugeot car and was knocked into the road. He was seriously injured in the collision and later died in hospital in Plymouth on 21 August, the court heard.
Price, 24, of Okehampton Road, Exeter, admitted causing death by careless driving. He is due to be sentenced in June, and was also given an interim driving ban.
Footage from cycling cameras used by Ramsey, from Okehampton, showed him riding across a humpback bridge before going along the country road where Price was in his car facing the direction of the oncoming cyclists from a parked area.
The court heard Price kept carrying out a three-point turn despite seeing the cyclists from a distance away.
Ramsey's widow told the court she had told him to "go carefully" before he went out with four friends around Dartmoor.
In a statement, she said they met at 17 and spent 35 years together, and he was a "highly intelligent, practical, common sense man" who made them feel "safe and loved".
The case was adjourned by District Judge Stuart Smith for a probation report, who told Price Ramsey's family had suffered a "devastating tragedy".
Price was also warned that carrying out an unsafe manoeuvre against a vulnerable road user such as a cyclist carried an immediate prison sentence.
