A woman has been seriously injured after an incident involving a council bin lorry.

The East of England Ambulance Service and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance attended the scene on Chapel Street in Billericay, Essex, after the incident took place at about 13:00 BST on Tuesday.

Basildon Council confirmed one of its refuse collection vehicles and a member of the public were involved and it was supporting its staff.

The road was closed for several hours and an investigation has been launched by Essex Police into the circumstances.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: "We were called today just before 13:55 BST to a medical emergency on Chapel Street, Billericay.

"Two ambulances, an ambulance officer vehicle and the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance attended the scene.

"A woman was transported by road to the Royal London Hospital for further treatment."

Andy Barnes, the Conservative leader of Basildon Council, said: "Our thoughts are with the member of the public involved in this incident and their family at this difficult time".

"We are working closely with Essex Police and supporting their investigation."

"As inquiries are ongoing, it would not be appropriate to speculate on the circumstances surrounding the incident," he continued.

"I would also like to thank the emergency services for their swift response and professionalism, as well as council staff who attended the scene and continue to assist with the ongoing investigation."
