A cyclist has been seriously injured after a crash with two vehicles.

Merseyside Police officers were called to the collision on Rowson Street in New Brighton, Wirral, at about 11:30 BST.

A man in his 50s had swerved his bike to avoid a light-coloured Fiat 500 and hit a stationary van, the force said.

Police are trying to find the driver of the Fiat 500 who left the scene, while the van driver stopped and is assisting with inquiries. Detectives are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Det Sgt Kurt Timpson said: "We are very keen to speak to the driver of the Fiat 500 to establish the circumstances of what happened, so I urge you to please get in touch as soon as possible.

"I also urge those with CCTV, doorbell footage or dashcam systems in the area to please check your footage and the events leading up to the collision or the moments thereafter.

"Any help we receive, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could assist with enquiries."

A North West Air Ambulance Charity spokesperson confirmed that they were called to the incident.

Rowson Street and the surrounding roads remain closed, and police have asked motorists to avoid the area and find an alternative route.
